Verse 42Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
Devotion
We wait for Jesus to come again anew this Advent. Matthew is not referring to the church’s liturgical seasons. Matthew is warning his people to be ready for Christ’s coming—maybe he is referring to the illusive and uncertain end of time as we know it. We may not be there, but we are here this Advent, waiting nevertheless. And Matthew tells us not just to “wake up,” but to “keep awake.” It may be harder to keep awake day after day, waiting and waiting until Christ comes again to us, to the world.
Prayer
O God of all time, as we wait this Advent for your Son, Jesus Christ, keep us awake day after day in steadfastness and hope. Amen.
