This Little Light of Mine, ELW 677
This little light of mine, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
this little light of mine, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
this little light of mine, I'm goin'-a let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
Everywhere I go, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
everywhere I go, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
everywhere I go, I'm goin'-a let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
Jesus gave it to me, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
Jesus gave it to me, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
Jesus gave it to me, I'm goin'-a let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
Devotion
I’ve never thought of this as a song for the Epiphany season, but it certainly is a fitting response to Isaiah’s thankful prayer that God has sent light to shine on the people dwelling in darkness. My congregation sang it as our hymn of the day last Sunday. It was great fun to see so many kids and adults waving their ‘lights’ around as they sang.
Whether we explicitly show it or not, as Christians we are walking advertisements for Jesus Christ. We shine our light when we stoop to welcome a child, when we make room for a stranger, when we share freely what God has given us, when we speak out against injustice, when we pray for a hurting friend, when we strive to understand someone from a different culture, when we take care of a neighbor … the list goes on. With so many opportunities to show Christ’s love, can we help but let it shine, let it shine, let it shine?
Prayer
Jesus, may the light of faith that shines in me bring love, hope and peace to someone living in darkness today. Amen.
