God, the Omnipotent! LBW 462
1 God the omnipotent!
King who ordainest
Great winds thy clarions, lightning thy sword:
Show forth thy pity on high where though reignest;
Give to us peace in our time, O Lord.
2 God the all-merciful!
Earth hath forsaken
Meekness and mercy, and slighted thy Word;
Bid not thy wrath in its terrors awaken;
Give to us peace in our time, O Lord.
3 God the All-righteous One!
We have defied thee,
Yet to eternity standeth thy Word;
Falsehood and wrong shall not tarry beside thee;
Give to us peace in our time, O Lord.
4 God the all-wise!
By the fire of thy chast'ning
Earth shall to freedom and truth be restored;
Through the thick darkness thy kingdom is hast'ning;
Thou wilt give peace in thy time, O Lord.
Devotion
In Micah, God invites us to walk with him in justice and kindness. God invites us into his sanctuary in Psalm 15. God calls us to proclaim Christ crucified in I Corinthians. God calls us in the Beatitudes to be his living gospel in the kingdom.
This is “God the omnipotent!”
This is “God the all merciful!”
This is “God the all righteous One!”
This is “God the all wise!”
This is Christ the King, whose pleasure it is to give us the kingdom, who reigns in “meekness and mercy, freedom and truth.” This is Christ who gives us his power, mercy, righteousness and wisdom to fulfill his call.
Prayer
God of righteousness, teach us to walk in your freedom and truth. Amen.
