Chapter 4Think of us in this way, as servants of Christ and stewards of God's mysteries. Verse 2Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy. Verse 3But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. I do not even judge myself. Verse 4I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. Verse 5Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive commendation from God.
Devotion
Would it be freeing for you not to worry about how others judge or measure you? For some of us, it would be even more freeing not to critically judge ourselves! Freed from concerns about measuring up to worldly standards (the amassing of possessions, accomplishments, status, wealth, etc.), what would we do? Would we become fully generous, compassionate and faithful stewards?
During the Corinthians’ time, a master entrusted his steward to distribute provisions (food, clothing and other necessities) to the household’s members. The steward was responsible for meeting needs and providing for all. Only his master had authority to judge his service.
God is our master; we need only be concerned how God judges our service. We know how to be good stewards: Share generously so there is enough for all. Seek justice. Love our neighbors. Tell everyone the good news of God’s grace and salvation. Judge not. Freely serve!
Prayer
Compassionate Master, forgive us when we fall into judgmental attitudes. Thank you for freeing us from the world’s standards. Thus freed, guide us to be good stewards who serve you faithfully and help meet the needs of all the members of your household. Amen.
