I Peter 1:17-23 (NIV) (NRSV)
Devotion
Peter tells us that it was not with perishable things such as silver and gold that we were redeemed from the empty way of life. Unfortunately, it is in the perishable things such as silver and gold that we too often seek to find meaning, joy and purpose in life. We should know better! And, in fact we do know better, but we need more than knowledge! We need redemption in Jesus Christ. As Peter said, "Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, so your faith and hope are in God." (v.21)
Actually, there isn't the slightest comparison between the "perishable things such as silver and gold," and the "precious blood of Christ." Luther said it this way, "I believe in Jesus Christ ... who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature ... not with silver and gold, but with his holy and precious blood ... in order that I might be his own ..."
Prayer
Thank you Lord, for redeeming us from a futile and empty way of life and giving us the confidence of your saving love and life eternal. Amen.
