My Life Flows On in Endless Song, ELW 763
1 My life flows on in endless song;
above earth's lamentation,
I catch the sweet, though far-off hymn
that hails a new creation.
Refrain
No storm can shake my inmost calm
while to that Rock I'm clinging.
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth,
how can I keep from singing?
2 Through all the tumult and the strife,
I hear that music ringing.
It finds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?
Refrain
3 What though my joys and comforts die?
The Lord my Savior liveth.
What though the darkness gather round?
Songs in the night he giveth.
Refrain
4 The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
a fountain ever springing!
All things are mine since I am his!
How can I keep from singing?
Refrain
Devotion
St. Paul writes in Romans 10 that faith comes from hearing. "My Life Flows On in Endless Song" (ELW 763) helps us imagine that hearing comes by song just as by sermon. Hymns have a way of becoming embodied in our lives, their words become our words as their tune becomes our rhythm and cadence. "My Life Flows On" is a confession of faith contained in a hymn, rooted in story and set to music. It is a hymn for those who have caught that sweet, though far-off hymn that hails a new creation; it is a hymn for those who have faced tumult, strife and lamentation; and it is a hymn that reminds us through it all, that nothing can shake us, nothing can separate us from the Rock we cling to because Jesus, our Rock, clings to us. How can we keep from singing?
Prayer
Dear Jesus, your peace makes fresh my heart, a fountain ever springing! All things are mine since I am yours, how can I keep from singing? While there are many storms in life, you are my inmost calm and quiet. Oh that I may sing your praises all the days of my life!
Amen.
