Verse 4But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, Verse 5in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. Verse 6And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" Verse 7So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.
Devotion
Born of woman. It means "truly human." If there is anything we share in common, all members of the human race, it is that we are all "born of woman."
Reproductive technologies may have altered the options for conceiving children. Changing definitions of family keep revising our notions of kinship. But all of us are "born of woman." We each entered this world through the vessel of one human womb.
And Jesus shares that with us. The one we confess to be "Very God of Very God," arrived on earth in the usual way, birthed by Mary, whom we remember today. Mary, the precious vessel who bore our fully divine, fully human Savior.
Simply amazing! Through Mary's humble receptivity to God's initiative, human DNA has entered the divine genome. Mary's "let it be to me" set the stage for the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, for us and our salvation.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you were "born of woman" to set free all those who are sinners from their mothers' wombs. As I remember Mary, your blessed mother, lead me to treasure You, her precious Son. In your name I pray. Amen.
