Devotion
I don’t know who said it first, but prayer is not so much about bending God’s ear to our will, as bending our ear to God’s will. In the Lord’s Prayer, before Jesus prays for bread or safety or deliverance, Jesus teaches us to pray, “God, Your kingdom come, Your will be done.” Prayer is the act of becoming open to the work of God.
Jesus invites us to name our needs, pray for others and rattle the door of the kingdom with our petitions. Moreover, in our naming, in our crying out to the Lord, in our praying, we are invited to trust that the good and gracious will of God is done, here and now, even when it is difficult to see or understand fully in the moment. It is far better God’s good and gracious will be done, than not. Bend your ear to God.
Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven,
Holy be Your name.
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Amen.
