Devotion
The voice of God is hard to hear when I am confident of my own strength. The Psalmist says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The Psalmist sings triumphantly of the majesty and splendor of God's deeds and this enduring covenant. The faithfulness and justice of God come with redemption for the Lord's people. When I am caught up in my own self-sufficiency, there is little room in my day to remember Luther's words that, "I cannot by my own reason or strength, believe in Jesus Christ my Lord or come to him..." Confidence in myself can prevent me from hearing God's promise of grace. Pride in my own ability to achieve can blind me to God's provision. It is in the fearing and loving of God, above all things, that gives me a grateful heart for God's abundant blessings.
Prayer
Almighty God, teach me the humility that helps me hear with joy your voice of providence for my needs today. Relying on your strength, let me sing your praises and give thanks with my whole heart. Amen.
