1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NRSV)
Read 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 on biblegateway.com
Verse 24Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it. Verse 25Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one. Verse 26So I do not run aimlessly, nor do I box as though beating the air; Verse 27but I punish my body and enslave it, so that after proclaiming to others I myself should not be disqualified.
Devotion
Paul, I cringe when I read your words about a race and winning a prize! Does a "winner" imply a "loser"? If so, how is it compatible with Christ's and your words of equality and inclusivity? It is not!
Rather, Paul, you understand that we race against ourselves and often cause our own defeat. It is easy to run aimlessly from one seemingly good activity to another apparently valuable pursuit. Frequently, we spread ourselves so thin that we do not reach the prize of fruitful task completion. Whatever our many roles and activities, it takes self-control to hear God's call, pursue it and persevere with focused determination so we fully love and serve God and our neighbors.
Paul, like you, this is a race I am willing and eager to run. It is a race I do NOT want to lose to myself. Therefore, on God's mark, get set, go!
Prayer
Steadfast Lord, it takes discipline to be a disciple. Ever steady my pace and guide my steps as I strive to love and serve you and my neighbors. When my race is over, please grant me the imperishable wreath of eternal life. Amen.
