Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise, vs. 1 & 2, ELW 834
1 Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise!
2 Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
Thy justice like mountains high soaring above
Thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.
Devotion
What comes to mind with the descriptor, "restless and noisy, rushing about?" Often shear ambition and the hustle for material goods puts humanity in that category. By contrast, the hymn writer proclaims God as, "unresting, unhasting and silent as night." There is a purposeful flow to this divine activity. God forever desires to create something new out of human restlessness, our wanting and wasting. The Holy Spirit calls us near. We gather with one another to remember God's forgiving ways. Humbly, we realize that we are not only forgiven and cleansed, but invited into God's mission. Goodness and love pours from the hand of God. To whom are we called to share God's justice and peace? Let us grow the chorus of those who sing gratefully: Most blessed! Most glorious! Thy great name we praise!
Prayer
God of wisdom and glory, we pause to adore you. You have created all that was and is. You forgive, heal and create a new way of being. Draw us near by your Spirit that we would treasure your grace and love today. Amen.
