Read Mark 7:24-37 on biblegateway.com
Verse 31Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis.
Verse 32They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him.
Verse 33He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue.
Verse 34Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, "Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened."
Verse 35And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly.
Verse 36Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it.
Verse 37They were astounded beyond measure, saying, "He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak."
Devotion
Bill, a very quiet man, was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He learned of this diagnosis at a time in his life that he was finding self-expression. Before Bill passed away, a friend sat at his bedside to write down everything Bill had to say. This was a time of deep spiritual and emotional healing for Bill. Clearly, Bill’s friend was an instrument of healing.
God has promised healing and wholeness. Jesus' ministry revealed God’s intention for this broken world. Jesus came to bring the power of God to bear on our spiritual, emotional and physical lives. He came to bring healing and wholeness for all people.
We are called to continue this ministry of healing Jesus has given to us. Healing, of every kind, is a part of our ministry. And finally, Jesus has given us a promise that there is a place where there will be no illness, emptiness, darkness or evil.
Prayer
Healing God, we pray for all people who are suffering. Help us to be instruments of your divine healing, giving dignity and hope to those who are experiencing illness, emptiness and despair, through Jesus Christ. Amen.
