If You But Trust in God to Guide You, ELW 769
Devotion
Googling the term "stress" reveals anxiety dominates the lives of many. The more things we have, the more stressed we are about holding on to them. We may think this is a recent development; however, fear and worry are nothing new.
In the 17th century Georg Neumark wrote, "What gain is there in anxious weeping, in helpless anger and distress?" In his time and ours there is plenty to worry about. However, comforted by the scriptures and the gift of faith, Neumark encouraged singers to be reminded that "God, who has chosen us by grace, knows very well the fears we face." In knowing those fears, God does not mock or chastise us, but comes to deliver us in our time of need.
Worry and anxiety are a part of our human condition. God knows this and fully entered into our world in Christ. Neumark encourages us, in the midst of our uncertainties and fears to "Sing, pray and keep God's ways." May we live and love despite our fears, knowing God delivers us from them all.
Prayer
Comforting God, we are adrift so often in our fears and anxiety. We worry about our families, schools, homes, communities, churches, and selves. Comfort us in our fear and challenge us to move from fear to service and care for your world. In Christ, our guide and example, Amen.
