Devotion
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
naught be all else to me, save that thou art:
thou my best thought both by day and by night,
waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.
Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord.
Thou my soul's shelter, and thou my high tow'r,
raise thou me heav'nward, O Pow'r of my pow'r.
Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise,
thou mine inheritance, now and always:
thou and thou only, the first in my heart,
great God of heaven, my treasure thou art.
Light of my soul, after victory won,
may I reach heaven's joys, O heaven's Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
still be my vision, O Ruler of all.
We come into God's presence seeking God and with a desire to keep our eyes focused on Christ throughout our day. We desire God and God alone, or do we?
In the second line of the hymn we sing, "naught be all else to me." The problem is there is so much other stuff in my life that gets in the way. There are so many other thoughts running through my mind even at the same time as I am singing and crying out for God to be my vision.
I hear in these lyrics a confession. We confess what it is that we keep clinging to even when we know what it is we truly want. We have succumbed to the riches of this world, and so we come and make known our confession as we once again seek God and God's vision for our lives.
What things have taken over in your life? What do you need to confess this day as you seek God's vision?
Prayer
God of forgiveness, you know us better than we can possibly know ourselves. Hear our confession and meet us in our plea for forgiveness, give us eyes to see you and you alone. We pray in the name of our risen Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
