Let Us Break Bread Together, ELW 471
Devotion
Let us break bread together on our knees;
let us break bread together on our knees.
Refrain
When I fall on my knees,
with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.
Let us drink wine together on our knees;
let us drink wine together on our knees. (Refrain)
Let us praise God together on our knees;
let us praise God together on our knees. (Refrain)
This week's devotional reflections have focused often on the theme of "gathering." One of the powerful themes of the "good news" of the scriptures is the way in which God continues to restore and gather a people. That gathering begins in baptism when God not only calls and claims us, but sets us in the midst of a believing and worshiping community of faith.
We celebrate the continuing story of that gathering each time we take our place at the table of our Lord.
This simple, yet powerful communion hymn places us around the table and reminds us repeatedly that when we at the table we are "together." When we eat the bread, we do it "together." When we drink the wine, we do it "together." When our Lord invites us to the table, it is not only to an individual or personal experience. Our Lord calls us to eat and drink "together" as members of "one body"—gathered and sent anew into the world now with the reminder that in Him we are never alone.
Prayer
Gracious Lord, you invite us to your table and invite us to come "together." Help us to be part of this one body and to live with the confidence that refreshed at your table we are never alone. Amen.
