“Borning Cry,” ELW 732

To the best of my knowledge, this is the only hymn in our hymnals in which God sings to God's children. It has become treasured by so many because it gives a powerful message of God's unconditional promise to be with us from birth to death and all that comes in between. (I personally love that part about wandering where demons dwell.) It is sung at baptisms, growing up times, marriages, and yes, finally at death.
Many years ago I had the pleasure of serving with Rev. Tom Grevlos (Luther Seminary, '86). Tom has an incredible tenor voice and he began the custom of singing the first verse a cappella from the back of the sanctuary as baptismal parties would gather at the font. It was a moving way to begin the baptismal liturgy. Not much needs to be said as this hymn says it all in a most wonderful way. God's "I was there" is pure good news.
Prayer
Gracious and loving Lord, we are comforted and empowered by your presence throughout our lives. Keep us mindful that "you were there." Amen.
