Be Thou My Vision (ELW 793, Verse 2)
Devotion
Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord.
Thou my soul's shelter, and thou my high tow'r,
raise thou me heav'nward, O Pow'r of my pow'r.
We have spent this week imagining the weight of the mantle of discipleship and the wonder of being called—as God's beloved—into partnership with God. And here we have a word inviting God to be in us—to be our wisdom, our language, our shelter, our wings. To be God as our power, our energizing force. Can it be so? Can we imagine it? Can we trust it to be? Yes! As new creations of God’s own making we take within ourselves all that God has to offer: water, wine, word. Madeleine L'Engle reminds us that the nature of love is to create. God's love creates and recreates us continuously so that not only is God's love new every morning but we are new every morning, refreshed and ready to boldly shoulder our calling and to lean on to the everlasting arms of this amazing God.
Prayer
Calling God, beckoning God, empowering God. You are our all in all. You are our every breath. Every moment of love given and received. You hold our soul and tenderly cradle our very life. Stir us to live as your free people, created in love, empowered to love for the sake of your world. Amen.
