Jesus Calls Us; O’er the Tumult (Evangelical Lutheran Worship 696)
1 Jesus calls us; o’er the tumult
of our life’s wild, restless sea,
day by day his clear voice sounding,
saying, “Christian, follow me”:
2 As of old Saint Andrew heard it
by the Galilean lake,
turned from home and toil and kindred,
leaving all for Jesus’ sake.
3 Jesus calls us from the worship
of the vain world’s golden store,
from each idol that would keep us,
saying, “Christian, love me more.”
4 In our joys and in our sorrows,
days of toil and hours of ease,
still he calls, in cares and pleasures,
“Christian, love me more than these.”
5 Jesus calls us! By your mercy,
Savior, may we hear your call,
give our hearts to your obedience,
serve and love you best of all.

Devotion
“Jesus Calls Us, O’er the Tumult,” allows us to reflect on the invitation from Jesus to leave behind the noise and distractions of the world and follow him. Just as the disciples heeded his call by leaving their fishing nets, we are reminded to prioritize our relationship with Jesus above all else in our lives. Jesus beckons us to walk with him through the storms of life, promising guidance, comfort, and purpose. Answering his call requires trust, faith, and a belief that God is faithful.
Pause to meditate on this hymn, listening attentively to Jesus’ call, casting aside the clamor of the world to find peace and fulfillment only possible in his loving presence. Strive to respond to Jesus’ call with open hearts and willing spirits, ready to embark on a journey of faith and obedience, trusting in his grace and strength every step of the way.
Prayer
Loving Savior, let us feel your presence and hear your call to follow you in the midst of life’s troubles. Strengthen our faith and give us the courage to cast away our fear, knowing that you are faithful and will provide for our every need if we but trust in you. Amen.
